On May 13, 1607, thirteen years before the Pilgrims landed in New England, 104 adventurous men and boys dropped anchor at Jamestown Island.  This site was chosen because of its deep water anchorage and military advantages.  James Fort was quickly constructed to provide protection from both Indians and Spaniards.
