Surrounded by the cool waters of Lake Whitehurst, Norfolk Botanical Garden
represents an oasis of many gardens covering 155 beautiful acres. The Garden
dates back to 1938, when 200 African-American workers sponsored by a Works
Progress Administration grant cleared the dense native vegetation and planted
4,000 azaleas. Today, Norfolk Botanical Garden features one of the largest and
most diverse collections of azaleas, camellias, roses and rhododendrons on the
east coast. Norfolk Botanical Garden is the nation’s only botanical garden
that can be toured by both tram and boat
