Situated at the tip of the "thumb" (Michigan's lower peninsula looks like a left-handed mitten), the Pointe Aux Barques lighthouse has protected Great Lakes ships for years. The lighthouse at Pointe Aux Barques ("point of the little boats") was constructed in 1857 to mark the turning point from Lake Huron into Saginaw Bay, and to warn mariners of the shallow regions near the coast.
