Walter Wilcox, a writer and photographer with a
love of mountain-climbing, discovered
Moraine Lake with a group of fellow students from Yale in 1899. Geologists
have since determined that the pile of rubble to which the name
refers is not a Moraine (a deposit left at the edge of a glacier, the result of
the grinding action underneath the mass of ice), but a rock-fall, probably from nearby Mount Babel.
